Shabbying up the Living Room

The time had come to do a little something more inviting to one of my shore rental units. So today I got busy with it.
Sometimes when people rent it, they move furniture around to their liking and take paintings off the wall to replace with stuff they like for the summer season.
It has been looking a little thread bare lately so I decided to set out and gather all things soft, fluffy, shabby, white and lacy, and put myself to work!
So first up are the before pics...
BEFORE

This area below is the first thing I am getting started on!
BEFORE

And little by little, I brought on the "Shabby" Vintage Cottage look.

AFTER

By moving furniture to a different arrangement, adding a vintage urn, some fluffy pillows, and a big white fluffy throw rug, I have created an inviting spot that draws you in.

The addition of a shaggy white rug, some vintage linens, pillows and a throw, complete the cozy comfy effect I was looking for.

The best part is, all of these items were around either my cottage beach house, or at the rental, in a closet or tucked into the shed. Even the lamps were hiding in a closet!

This transformation didn't cost one red cent!

I think it is fun to see what you can do to create a vision with just a little imagination!

I am more than pleased with how it looks now!

Project 13 and 14 of 2012 French Desk & Cottage Book case

I have to admit I have fun with these projects. I still jump in without taking before shots  quite a bit.
I'll have to work on that!
Here is my latest  2 bits of creativity.
A pretty French Provincial Desk.
I am a bit behind on my posting this picture is under the Valentine's window
That window is actually dressed for Saint Patty's Day now and looks like this:

And now lets peek at one wall of my booth and that bookcase I re-did

I did take before pics of that.. a skinny shelf with good bones..and a dark side.. He needed help in being repurposed.
He had been used and abused.

And just a coat of white beachified him enough for me to fall in love

I hated to part with this one, but i am sure he will find a happy home

With lots of aquas and greens in my booth for  the coming spring.

Pretty soon the adventures of Picky and Pickier will begin again!! Yippee!!
With my upcoming annual trip to Florida  and I get to hang out with my sis, drink mojitos, and hit every junk shop on the eastern seaboard!!
hmmmnn maybe one of these is in my future...
Happy Trails to you!

Some White Vintage Cottage Beach House Discoveries

I found such pretty vintage finds out on a recent "Treasure Hunt".
A perfect pristine white cutwork duvet cover.

The cutwork is so awesome.

The prettiest work I've seen in a while!

I love how it looks wth my simply shabby chic pillows in my shore house cottage

The lamps, I found at "Home Goods" last year, they were a " had to have " find

Don't you just love it when you have a successful day out shopping?

I also found, on the same day, this lovely twin eyelet bedskirt,
which I will be holding on to until I find another to use in my middle bedroom which is due for a redecoration.
i love the look of eyelet
I adore the texture in this bedskirt.
I really enjoyed washing and hanging outside on the line at my beach house.

The fresh ocean air makes everything smell so crisp and fresh!
It always reminds me of when I was a kid and sheets were hung on the line to dry in the summer sun.
They always felt so crisp, and so refreshing when I went to bed I would move my feet back and forth and listen to, and feel the sheets rustle.
I still do, and some sheets are better than others.
I really love Rachel Ashwell's "simply shabby chic" line of sheets, because even after 3- 4 years of using some of them, they still have that crisp and fresh feel that reminds me so much of sheets dried out in the sun, on the line. (even when I use the dryer) And they still fit perfectly.
Thank You, Rachel ! for making comfortable precious linens for a reasonable price. So now i will add these precious new finds to my collection of yummy linens.
I like how quickly one simple find changed the look of this room.

which I had originally designed after the idea below in a coastal living magazine

But change is good right? I love change. Although the design challenge was really fun,
I love the white a lot more.

what'ya think?

Foofin around Down the Shore

I came down the shore on Saturday. Just needed a couple of days off to break things up. So while I was whiling away the hours, relaxing with a mojito in hand... I took a good look at my chair and a half and decided it was time to throw it in the wash again. I usually do that once a year, cause its slipcovered. and I always have to wait for it to line dry, because it's recommended to not go in the dryer. So I got to thinking...while I was waiting...
I had this great Rachel Ashwell shabby chic slipcover from target on-line, which I was going to return because it didn't fit my big bulky loveseat....just sitting in my car....Let's try it on the chair and a half.

Have to say LOVE

This slip comes with a little ruffled front end! and it's so comfy. A nice white twill.
It is thin tho, so a bright colored print sofa would probably show through. Yes i have kids, a whole slew of em., teenagers and grown adults, and a sweet little grandbaby too. And lots of sandy toes.
Nothing like a white slip to throw in the wash and bleach at will!

I am thinking about whitewashing those dark frames around the ships. These are a gift from my brother. He's a really good painter.

It went on pretty easy and tucked in simply too. it comes with a seperate seat cushion, that you adjust and tighten.

And then I wrapped my separate pillow back in a plain white sheet. I will have to get around to making this pillow an actual cover, but I am very happy with it for now.
It's a nice change,  and the pale blue slip that came on my chair will go in storage for a while. I actually bought this chair and sofa and a smaller  club chair from Macy's furniture about 8 years ago. a big store with just furniture, not the Macy's in the Malls. I loved it so much I bought 2 of the club chairs for my florida house. They had a wide choice of slipcovers to choose. I never see slipcovered sofas offered for sale anymore, except Pottery barn and they don't have a lot of fabrics. The whole set is so so comfy, and the sofa is even a sleeper, with a special slipcover.

And after a night of cozying up on it and watching my new favorite show "Falling Skies".. I  still like the way it looks  in the morning.
I didn't even have to straighten it, just fold my blanket, and done.

Here is a close up of the little vintage purse I found out thrifting. I just adore her.

Now if i could only get my hands on some Hydrangea for this pitcher.

I know where there are plenty but I can't take any. Just down the street in the lighthouse gardens is an enormous bush, but no touchy, touchy allowed. Understandably so.

Right now, as I write this post, i am enjoying the sounds of the "Soul Cruisers" singing " I'll always love my momma" wafting thru the salty North Wildwood air from Keenan's Irish pub just up the street. They are there every Monday, and i don't even have to leave my front porch, to hear all of the oldies but goodies of Motown sound...so I am thanking the Lord for all my blessings, and the comfort of a cozy home, with the sea air drifting through the windows.

What I love about the shore is ...most often, I don't even need the air conditioner. It can be sweltering back home near Philly, even in the suburbs, because it is "the Delaware Valley, and humid just stays there.
Down the shore it is always a delightful sea breeze in my cottage, and I just love to suck it up.... Now they are singing " Bright sunshiny Day" i think we can make it now the rain has gone...

"Give me just a little more time"... and our  love will surely grow.
Time to dance.
Later ladies!
Eileen
